Social Work at Prairie

Social Work services are for ALL students at Prairie. From whole classroom learning, to individualized intervention based on IEP goals  and brief interventions to occasional check-ins; Social work services are truly multi-faceted.

Classroom Instruction

I am present in the 1st grade classrooms weekly providing a social-emotional skills lesson. Some topics include: making friends, being a good friend, learning what it means to be kind, respectful, responsible and ready.  Additionally, as a classroom we learn different social-thinking strategies.

For 2nd-5th grade students, I am in each class once per month.  Similarly to first grade, we work on many different social topics relevant to age level, need of a particular class, or sometimes we brainstorm as a class what they would like to talk about. Past topics have included problem-solving, taking responsibility for my actions, evaluating the "size of a problem", learning about the Zones of Regulation, and many others!

Brief Intervention

At times you and your child's team may feel that he/she could benefit from some interventions for issues such as: school based anxiety, problems making or maintaining friends, organization, self-esteem, work-completion, or a variety of other things.  I can observe and evaluate the need for social work services and your child can receive services for a designated period of time.  The only thing that needs to be signed is a permission slip for services.

One thing to remember is that the issue your child is struggling with must be impacting him/her in the school day in order to qualify for instruction. If your child struggles primarily at home, or with an issue that isn't appropriate for a school-based intervention, I can refer you to a variety of community providers that can help with a larger problem.

IEP Goal Completion & 504 Case Manager

If your child has an IEP and struggles with any social-emotional situations, I am part of the team to evaluate the need for social-work services in the school.

Formal goals & objectives are established and your child would have a set number of minutes per week that they are required to see me.

I am also the Section 504 Case Manager. If your child has a diagnosed medical or mental health diagnosis and doesn't qualify for an IEP, he or she MAY be eligible for a Section 504 Plan. Please contact me if you believe this is the case. esauer@kcsd96.org
